Turnout Actuation Mechanism Modification

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

Please note: I made below experience with the 9-volt-track-system turnouts. I am not sure, how it is for the RC tracks.

If you use and play with Lego trains, you are obviously in contact with their tracks and especially with the turnouts as well. You might recognize already, that some of them are quite hard to switch from one to the other side. This isn’t nice, especially because the switch lever holder on the side of the turnout is very thin and can break easily and the connection between holder and switch lever (the yellow piece) is realised with just two very small pins, which is not very stable. And this behaviour (hard to switch) makes it almost impossible, to actuate them remotely as well.

There is actually only one solution: Open the back side and modify the switch rod. After that, the turnout works much smoother and the friction of the entire switch mechanism is still enough to hold the turnout tongue stable in the right position.
