“Dead Track” Wire Bridge

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

If you use 9-volt tracks and in particular 9-volt turnouts, you might recognize already, that the turnouts switch off the opposite track if you move the turnout tongue. This feature is actually nice, because you can deactivate a train just with switching the turnout.

For 9-volt systems, this feature is helpful, especially if you are a “carpet” layout enthusiast and not one with a fixed track layout, where you have various ways to do the electrical wiring.

But there are situations, where the deactivation of the opposite track is not wanted. There are ways out there to modify the turnouts itself. But these modifications are permanently and if you want to have the deactivation back, it isn’t possible easily.

Another way is to bridge the tracks with a wire. You only need to bridge one track, the one which goes over the turnout tongue. The other track is unbroken and is always under power.

The wire bridge is easy to make and the instruction below (free download) shows step by step how to make it.
