Electric Locomotive BR E42 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn

Updated: Jun 8, 2023

The BR E42 was a relatively small electric locomotive operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. It was used for freight trains as well as for slower passenger train services. The E42 was basically the BR E11 but with smaller changes and modifications. There were 292 locomotives built between 1962 and 1976. The locomotive's nickname was “Holzroller”, probably because it was often used with freight wagons for wood/stem transport.

The locomotive existed in two colour schemes: red with black coloured bogies and green/black with red coloured bogies.

My model represents the E42 011 in green/black colour design with red bogies. The locomotive is equipped with two train motors connected to a battery box (alternative manufacturer). For a better traction, four bricks with extra weight are installed above the bogies. For an easy access to the battery box, the roof is removeable. Few parts are not available from Lego® in the correct colours. Alternative useable parts are shown in the instruction.

The locomotive can pass curves and turnouts down to R40 without any issue

MOC stats:

Length: 45.0 studs

Width: 8.7 studs

Height: 16.2 studs

Weight: 1200 grams

Parts: 1377

I provide a detailed step-by-step building instruction. At the end of it, you find an overview of all needed parts.

A print-ready sticker sheet is available too (in case the model contains stickers). I provide it in the widely used PDF-format in high-resolution and print-ready.

Furthermore, I provide the parts list in Excel format. This makes it easy to filter out needed parts and create order lists.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damages or injury on parts and humans happen while following my instructions. Everything you do is your responsibility and under your personal risk.
