Others than normal train coaches, double decker coaches have two levels of passenger accommodation to increase passenger capacity up to 57%. A positive side effect is that a larger number of passengers can be transported even on shorter platforms.
Double-decker trains are still very common today and can often be seen on the railway tracks in Germany. In the former GDR, these trains were also very popular and were often used, especially because of their advantage of the increased number of passengers they could carry. An important aspect because in the GDR, the railway was a very important transportation method, as cars were hard to come by.
The MOC is inspired by the type DGBge. Usually, the colour scheme was a dark green body and a gray roof as this MOC shows. Later versions in a brighter green and with dark tan roof could be seen as well.
A bit special on the DGBge’s is the Jacobs bogie with the access section connecting the passenger compartments. There were 4 of these access sections and a total of 5 Passenger compartments. The rear compartment contained a passage and transition that made it possible to reach other coupled passenger waggons. The front section contains a cabin for a driver, so it was possible to use it as a push-pull train.
For length and weight reasons (see MOC stats below), I decided to release this train only with 4 passenger compartments, two non-smoker sections in the front and two smoker sections in the rear (that time it was possible and allowed to smoke in trains, unbelievable today).
All compartments have interior, and you can place minifigures (without their legs, but torso and head fit).
The train is able to pass curves down to R56. For this, only very little modifications are needed, all shown and described in the PDF instruction. No additional parts are needed. Without the modifications, the train can pass curves down to R72.
Dark green is a very challenging colour with Lego®. So, it is still not possible to build this train purely with Lego® bricks. three parts are not available in dark green (hinge brick base 3937, hinge brick top 3938 and train window frame 6556). There are two options: 1) replacing those three parts with versions in an available colour or 2) using parts from alternative manufacturers. A workaround for the window frames would be to use a trans-clear panel 1x4x3 (60581) and the already prepared stickers from the sticker sheet. I still would recommend using the alternative window frames which provide a better finished look as the renderings show. Details of possible sources for the alternative parts can be found in the download section. Also, the PDF instruction itself will give necessary hints and describes everything.
MOC stats:
Length: 209.4 studs, 1675mm
Width: 9.0 studs, 72 mm
Height: xx studs, 122 mm
Weight: 3.9 kg
Parts: 5028
I provide a detailed step-by-step building instruction. At the end of it, you find an overview of all needed parts.
A print-ready sticker sheet is available too (in case the model contains stickers). I provide it in the widely used PDF-format in high-resolution and print-ready.
Furthermore, I provide the parts list in Excel format. This makes it easy to filter out needed parts and create order lists.
