This MOC represents the EMD F7 from the Santa Fe Railways with its known red/silver colour scheme (silver in this case means light bluish gray due to part availability).
In the beginning, I wanted to solve the complex colour scheme of the F7 with stickers. But that would have meant sticker wallpapers, and stickers covering multiple parts. Finally, I decided against the stickers, but for a brickbuild solution, with some compromises.
The EMD F7 is a model of 1,500-horsepower diesel-electric locomotive produced between February 1949 and December 1953 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD) and General Motors Diesel (GMD).
The F7 was used as a freight-hauling unit, but also in front of passenger service hauling trains such as the Santa Fe Railway's high-speed flagship trains, the Super Chief. The EMD F7 was by far the best-selling cab unit of all F-units of all time.
There is a lot more information about the EMD F7 out there. A good start might be this page:
Back to the MOC: Because it is common, that the A-Unit and the B-Unit are used together (often even several B-Units and a front and rear A-Unit), I decided to reduce the length of the locomotive a little bit, so it is not getting too long especially with wagons behind.
There are several motorization concepts possible. The instruction shows a concept with the common 4x8x3 battery box (alternative manufacturer). But a PoweredUp® Hub would fit as well. There is enough space inside. The parts list at the end includes the necessary items to motorize the A-Unit only. But with some additional parts, it is possible to motorize the B-Unit as well without problems. All is prepared for that. If you motorize both Units, it will increase the traction further, which is already good. In my case, it was more than enough with the motorized A-Unit. The extra weight bricks in the A-Unit help to have a great traction already.
All other Unit-combinations, like A-A, A-B-A, A-B-B-A – and others – are possible too. Only the parts quantity must be adjusted then. But with this instruction, which covers motorized, as well as non-motorized bogies, it isn’t a problem at all.
MOC stats (A and B-Unit together):
Length: 82.5 studs
Width: 8.9 studs
Height: 14.2 studs
Weight: 1900 grams
Parts: 2136
I provide a detailed step-by-step building instruction. At the end of it, you find an overview of all needed parts.
A print-ready sticker sheet is available too (in case the model contains stickers). I provide it in the widely used PDF-format in high-resolution and print-ready.
Furthermore, I provide the parts list in Excel format. This makes it easy to filter out needed parts and create order lists.
