Diesel Locomotive BR118 Deutsche Reichsbahn

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

This MOC represents a diesel locomotive BR118 of the East German Railway Deutsche Reichsbahn. The original locomotive was designed and built in East Germany and should replace the old steam engines. The BR118 was used for heavy cargo and passenger trains on main lines. This main line version was equipped with two 2-axle bogies. Later exists also a 6-axle version for branch lines (6-axles provide a better weight distribution, important for the weaker branch line tracks). Now to the MOC itself.

It is always hard to construct rounded surfaces with angular bricks, especially in small scales like here. There is no brick that even comes close to the shape that is actually required to build the front of the locomotive, especially the windscreen section. So the final version is the best what I could do with existing Lego® bricks. The rest of the locomotive is easy-peasy compared to the front section.

I built two versions of the BR118 and with the available instruction you are able to build both of them. The difference lies in the chassis. One is the 6-axle version, so each bogie has three axles. For better curve and turnout driveability, the middle axle can move and follow the curvy tracks. This version is not motorized. The other on is the 4-axle version, two axles per bogie. So ideal to equip it with a 9-volt train motor (or two, if you need more traction).

The specs below are based on the 6-axle version, as the main instruction (TV-005) does. The motorized variant needs some additional parts which you can find in the second instruction (TV-005-B).

Model information:

I provide a detailed step-by-step building instruction. At the end of it, you find an overview of all needed parts.

A print-ready sticker sheet is available too (in case the model contains stickers). I provide it in the widely used PDF-format in high-resolution and print-ready.

Furthermore, I provide the parts list in Excel format. This makes it easy to filter out needed parts and create order lists.
